Not sure it'll help. Of course, this is Shooter....

The Minnesota Vikings' release of eccentric wide receiver Randy Moss today should be an indication that coach Brad Childress still has owner Zygi Wilf's backing. And maybe Childress, clearly an autocrat when it comes to running his football team, will end up winning if there is a power struggle with quarterback Brett Favre, too.

Let's face it: Moss was poison the first time he played for the Vikings, and he's still poison. Give Childress credit; if he's going down, he's going down his way. And that'll be without a disruptive punk with whom to contend.

I think it is a sign that Zygi has Childress's back. Although, I'm sure he only has his back DURING the season. Come the offseason, if they finish poorly and the team gives up after him putting this much talent on the table....he will consider whether or not to keep Childress.

And...if things go badly southern during the season (one or two more major gaffes), we could see Frazier has interim head coach.

Go Vikings!

This is a move that the media loves, but apparently the "rubes" are 95% against (according to Dan Barreiro on KFAN). Of course, Barreiro gets to have his cake and eat it, too, as he supports the move, but complains that Childress and the team handled it badly (which they did).

Sorry media elite . . . sometimes the "rubes" are ahead of you in realizing what's what.

Also raises a question: What did Lord Favre say about this move? Does anyone think they made the move without getting his blessing? If they didn't -- or if he didn't approve -- then how will he react?

My guess is that he was approached and approved of the move. Which is even more disturbing, as Moss has a lot more tread left on the tires than Favre does.

Or possibly the "rubes" hatred and loathing of Childress eclipses all other reasonable observations.

There may be some of that, but I've always tried to be balanced in discussing the positives and negatives that Childress presents. Unfortunately, the negatives far outweigh the positives . . . and it's apparent that he is not capable of winning a Super Bowl. With that in mind, the sooner that the Vikings get a new coach, the closer they will be to reaching that goal.

Oh, I wasn't talking about Childress. Clearly, he's gone from being a mediocre coach, to making a series of terrible decisions on and off the field that puts him firmly in the terrible coach category. Childress should be fired. However, one of his bad decisions was taking a risk on Moss. I don't want to watch Moss with a Vikings jersey almost as much as I don't want Childress as a Vikings coach. Let him quit and pout for some other team.

I called. Told the Wilfs, "You're going to fire Childress at the end of the year anyway. Might as well do it now."

I called, and left a message supporting the decision.

As an owner, can I get fined by the league for that?
